Our History

The House of Java dates back to 1917.  Originally located on King St. West in Hamilton Ontario, the shop was purchased by Helen Stewart in 1958 and ran the store for 10 years.  Helen’s daughter Marjorie and her sister-in-law Florence kept the family business running by opening the current shop on James St. South in Hamilton in 1973.  Laurie, a third generation of family now runs this established coffee house.

About Our Store

Located on the corner of James South and Duke Street, the House of Java is a small, quaint store that retains the atmosphere of an old world shop.  Stocked with over 60 types of gourmet coffee and 30 kinds of tea, we strive for quality by buying some of the world’s most sought after coffees.  We are the only merchant in Hamilton that sells Kopi Luwak – the world’s most expensive coffee.

For a complete list of our beans, please go to our ‘Coffee Menu’ page.  We also stock a wide variety or gourmet foods, fresh-roasted nuts and make up gift baskets to order.  For these items please go to our ‘Products’ page.

There are approximately 60 varieties of the coffee plant. However, only two are really suited for the commercial market. These are:  Arabica & Robusta.

Americans are the worlds leading consumers of coffee, drinking over 4 million cups of java per day.
